A local couple from Victoria were taking a hike on New Year’s Day when they ran into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The royal couple is currently staying in neighbouring Saanich during their six-week break.

Iliya Pavlovic and Asymina Kantorowicz were hiking in Horth Hill Regional Park when they wanted to take pictures of themselves with a selfie stick.

“We noticed a group was standing nearby and they had two dogs, one of which was approaching us,” recalled Kantorowicz.

The woman came up to them and asked if they wanted her to take the picture, only they didn’t realize it was Meghan Markle.

“She starts asking if we want her to take a photo for us,” Kantorowicz said. “We said sure. I didn’t see who she was at that time.”

They did recognize Abigail Spencer, who is close friends with the Duchess. It took a moment before Kantorowicz put the two together.

“I froze up. I actually couldn’t believe who it was. Then I looked over to the side and that’s when I realized Prince Harry was standing there,” Kantorowicz said. “I kept looking back and forth like, ‘Is this actually happening?'”

“In that moment the only thing I could think to say, ‘There’s only so much that selfie sticks can do,'” Kantorowicz added. “She laughed and responded with something like, ‘We’ll have to do better.'”

Prince Harry added, “No pressure.”

The group then wished each other “Happy New Year” as they walked off with their two dogs, Guy– a beagle and their new dog–a black lab whose name is still unknown.

ET Canada has confirmed the Archie was not on the hike with them.

Harry and Meghan have been spotted in a number of locations near the south end of Vancouver Island since their stay started in early December.
