Penn Badgley, a.k.a. Joe Goldberg of “You” or Dan Humphrey in “Gossip Girl”, says he sees the “similarities” in both his uber-popular shows.

The actor, 33, chatted with InStyle magazine about his devilishly good character on the hit Netflix series “You” and the connection between Joe and Dan.

Badgley starred as the beloved Humphrey on “Gossip Girl” for all six seasons between 2007 and 2012. Spoiler alert: Dan was behind the anonymous screen of Gossip Girl the entire time – promoting fans to point out the similarities between Dan, stalker for Gossip Girl, and Joe, serial killer.

“When I first read the pilot script for ‘You’, I definitely saw the similarities,” he confessed. “I think I was really caught between being able to appreciate how that’s an interesting progression of things for me, but also how it’s not. We pulled off this somewhat remote possibility of the show doing just what it’s done.”

He added, “I feel like the fact that I’m the person helps it be just that thing, because I was Gossip Girl.”

But when it comes to Joe’s disguise, a baseball hat, Badgley thinks Dan could have done better. “Trust me, as an actor, I find it very challenging to sometimes suspend my disbelief when you’re forced into a position that is just in the literal sense of the word incredible,” he said. “That’s the interesting thing about this show — it works.”

Netflix will bring back Badgley as Joe for a third season this year.
