The Origins Of ‘U Can’t Touch This’ Revealed In Cheetos Super Bowl Ad With MC Hammer

You can thank Cheetos for inspiring MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This”.

At least, according to a new Cheetos ad ahead of Super Bowl 2020. In the short commercial, viewers are transported back at least 30 years. MC Hammer sits in front of his piano, with a bag of Cheetos in hand, searching for his next hit.

He goes to press a key but his fingers are covered in infamous Cheetos dust.

“Wait, I can’t touch this!” he says. Then it hits him.

“U Can’t Touch This” was released in 1990 as the lead single from his third record, Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em.

The song samples the prominent opening riff of the Rick James song “Super Freak”. James and other performers on the original recording filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement. It was settled out of court. James was added to the credits and received millions in royalties.
