Laura Dern shared an emotional moment with her dad Bruce Dern before accepting her first SAG award on Sunday night.
The actress won for her outstanding performance as a relentless divorce lawyer representing an actress (Scarlett Johansson) throughout her separation from a dominant New York City playwright (Adam Driver) in the Netflix drama “Marriage Story”.
Before making her way to the stage, Dern shared a sweet embrace with her father, who sat next to her during the show.
“I’m emotional because I got to hug my dad!” said Dern as she headed towards the microphone, pushing back tears.
She continued by thanking “Marriage Story”‘s “leader” and “hero,” director Noah Baumbach, and her co-stars Johansson, Driver, Ray Liotta and Alan Alda. Dern then showed her heartfelt gratitude towards her family at the end of her speech.
“I literally, literally would not be here if it were not for actors,” Dern said, as she referenced a story about how her mother, actress Diane Ladd, and father conceived her on the set of the 1966 film “The Wild Angels” by Roger Corman. “Thank you for raising me in the community of your friends, on your movies, doing your plays, and getting to know the wealth of these extraordinary people, and for my Grandma Mary for raising me and my best friend on daily television reruns and the partnerships, the voices, and people I’ve watched and loved forever”
Dern concluded her speech with one last message to her father: “I love you, dad!”
Dern is the first in her family to take home a SAG award since neither Bruce or Diane won in the past. Her achievement as Best Supporting Actress (against Jennifer Lopez in “Hustlers,” Johansson in “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Bombshell” actresses Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman) makes her a frontrunner for the Oscar category, given her success and recognition following the recent Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.
