Fans miffed about Adam Sandler’s Oscars snub are finally getting some explanation.
In a new article for the New York Post, Academy members address some of the biggest snubs among this year’s Oscar nominees, including Jennifer Lopez in “Hustlers” and Sandler in “Uncut Gems”.
“That [performance] was a tour de force. He’s emerging as a truly great actor, but then he does cheesy Netflix comedies that are really dumb,” one voter said of Sandler.
“There are a lot of movies, a lot of performances per year for us to watch. Unfortunately, actors become brands. Sandler’s brand doesn’t scream ‘Oscar’, but Leo DiCaprio’s and Jonathan Pryce’s do,” the voter continued.
According to another voter, Sandler’s joking comments on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show last year may have got him into hot water.
“If I don’t get [the Oscar], I’m going to f**king come back and do [a movie] again that is so bad on purpose just to make you all pay,” Sandler laughed at the time, but some didn’t take it as a joke.
“There was an arrogance to [Adam],” the voter claimed. “It’s a lack of respect.”
Another voter discussed the lack of a nomination for Eddie Murphy in “Dolemite Is My Name”, explaining that it had a lot to do with his campaigning, including hosting “Saturday Night Live” after ignoring the show for 35 years.
“I didn’t like his attempt for it,” the voter said, but then added, “If Adam Sandler has another great film, he’ll be nominated. If Eddie Murphy has another great film, he’ll be nominated.”
