Kaitlyn Dever, one of 2019’s biggest breakout stars, is gushing about her run-in with one of Hollywood’s heavyweights.

The actress, 21, who starred in two of the biggest shows and movies of last year, Netflix’s “Unbelievable” and “Booksmart” next to Beanie Feldstein, is ES Magazine‘s current cover star where she chatted about bringing the incredible true story of Marie Adler to the streaming service and meeting Tom Hanks at the Golden Globes.

Dever earned a Globe nod, in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television category, for her portrayal of Adler in “Unbelievable”. Ultimately, the award went to Michelle Williams for “Fosse/Verdon”.

But during her first-ever Globes, Dever rubbed shoulders with some of TV and film’s biggest stars, including this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient, Hanks.

According to Dever, while chatting with the legendary actor about her role in the series, he placed his new Golden Globe in her hands and told her, “You’ve got to get used to it, because you’re going to be holding one soon.”

And the real-life Adler agrees, “She said it was ‘perfect’ and she found a lot of closure from watching the show,” Dever said of Alder’s words. “When I heard that, I was like, ‘I don’t need anything else.’ That gives me the chills. It makes me so happy. I was nervous about what she would think. I wasn’t sure if she was even going to watch it.”

And now, Dever hopes to continue to pick those important roles.

“I want to continue to play really strong, complex women who seem like women I know and find the roles that are more often given to men. I want to find the really rich characters for women,” she said, adding, “‘Booksmart’ has been so fulfilling… A character like Amy has never been in a movie seen by a wide audience and that was really exciting to me. We never mention that she’s queer in the film — we see her explore it. I remember someone thanking me for bringing the character to life because she’s a queer woman who grew up in a small town and had to go to really tiny theatres to see herself on screen. To enable someone to see themselves in a character I’m playing — what more could I ask for?”

Dever’s issue of ES Magazine hits newsstands Jan. 23.
