Jessica Simpson is opening up about her old relationships.
The 39-year-old singer spoke with People about her upcoming memoir Open Book, in which she gets candid about her ex John Mayer.
“He’d walk into a room and pickup his guitar and you’d swoon,” Simpson tells the magazine. “I didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission.”
In the book, Simpson reveals that she and Mayer secretly dated for months.
“Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally,” she writes.
Simpson also reveals that while Mayer made her feel physically powerful, she felt insecure around him in other ways.
“I constantly worried that I wasn’t smart enough for him,” she writes. “He was so clever and treated conversation like a friendly competition that he had to win.”
She adds, “My anxiety would spike and I would pour another drink. It was the start of me relying on alcohol to mask my nerves.”
The relationship ended in 2010 after an interview with Playboy in which Mayer called Simpson “sexual napalm.”
“He thought that was what I wanted to be called,” Simpson says. “I was floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that.”
She continues, “A woman and how they are in bed, is not something that is ever talked about. It was shocking.”
The incident was so shocking to Simpson, that she immediately cut off contact with Mayer.
“He was the most loyal person on the planet and when I read that he wasn’t, that was it for me,” she reveals. “I erased his number. He made it easy for me to walk away.”
Simpson adds, “I know that he’s publicly apologized and I don’t want to take that away from him.”
Later in 2010, Simpson met Eric Johnson. The two got married in 2014 and have three children together.
