Who needs therapy when you have late-night television?
John Mulaney dove deep with Stephen Colbert on Global’s “The Late Show” when Colbert asked the question, “Is your anxiety why you don’t want anyone to know you?”
The question had the 37-year-old comedian sipping slowly on his water. He finally revealed that it all goes back to his childhood. Mulaney shared an anecdote about being an enterprising baby and said, “From an early age, I tried to be funny for the adults. I think I thought and feel still that I have to provide that in order for people to like me.”
Turning the question back on Colbert, Mulaney asked the late-night host what his “process” was for switching between his public and private personas.
Colbert offered the insightful answer that he doesn’t “want a lot from the audience other than to make them laugh and to make a connection.”
The philosophical conversation brought Mulaney back to his Netflix show “John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch”. He recounted how the kids he worked with knew they couldn’t control things — like karate.

“I thought for a couple of years I could control the karate classes of my life, but you cannot,” he adds. “You still will be sometimes shoved into a car and told you’re taking ballroom dancing.”
Mulaney concluded the heartfelt interview with the advice, “Young men, learn how to dance.”
