Rafael Nadal just had his “scariest” tennis moment during the Australian Open.
During a second-round match on Thursday, Argentina’s Federico Delbonis, the pro hit the ball a little too hard and it struck a ball girl standing on the side of the court. In footage of the moment, the ball hit the young girl on the side of the head.
After the incident, Nadal went over to check on the youngster, named Annita, and shared a sweet moment. The Spanish athlete leaned in and gave her a kiss on the cheek and patted her head.
“For her, it probably was not a good moment. I was so scared for her, honestly,” Nadal said following the accident. “The ball was quick and straight on her. She’s a super brave girl.”
After winning the match, Nadal met up with Annita and her family, even sharing a selfie on Twitter.
“Had the chance to meet her and her family today,” the athlete wrote in the tweet. “So happy she is well after the scariest moment I’ve had on a tennis court. Annita is a brave girl!”
Nadal will return to the courts Friday, to face Pablo Carreño Busta.
