The last time we checked in with Bilbo Baggins, he was within sight of the Lonely Mountain, but still had a good 50 kilometres (or whatever the unit of measurement is in Middle Earth) to go before actually reaching it.
If the new trailer for the sequel is any indication, it looks like we won’t have to wait for the third movie for Bilbo to reach his destination: The new trailer features ample footage of Bilbo in the dragon’s lair, strongly suggesting that the third movie (to be subtitled There And Back Again) will mostly focus on the “back again”; part.
Fans of the original Lord of the Rings will be delighted to discover that Legolas (Orlando Bloom), who did not appear in Tolkein’s book, is featured prominently in the trailer, as well as the giant spider from The Two Towers, Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen), and the One Ring. But in addition to checking back in with some of the old characters, the new movie will also introduce us to a few fresh faces, including Legolas’ elf love interest (played by Lost“s Evangeline Lilly) and Smaug the Dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres Dec. 13th.
