Shaw Media and Indian Grove Productions have announced that production has begun on the new Global TV medical drama Remedy.

The new Canadian-made series, set to air in 2014, is described as a “high stakes, prime-time medical drama promis[ing] a distinctive “upstairs/downstairs’ glimpse behind the scenes of a downtown hospital, and goes beyond the OR and the ER to reveal the compelling community who together make the healing happen.”

Remedy takes a unique approach to a well-worn TV genre by depicting an urban hospital through the eyes of new orderly Griffin (Dillon Casey), who is also a med-school dropout and son of the Chief of Staff (Enrico Colantoni, soon to be seen in the Veronica Mars movie). Other members of this medical family include Griffin’s surgeon sister Melissa (Sara Canning), their sibling Sandy (Sarah Allen), eldest daughter and ICU nurse, and Slings and Arrows‘ Martha Burns as the siblings’ absentee mom, described as “high functioning family drunk and power attorney.”

As Griffin works “downstairs” in the hospital, he meets a colourful crew of co-workers, including The Red Green Show‘s Patrick McKenna as his supervisor. Also in the mix are Matt Ward as Sandy’s fiancé and Genelle Williams as a female co-worker who catches Griffin’s eye.

The production team has assembled a fiercely talented cast who will bring [series creator] Greg Spottiswood’s brilliant vision to life,” said Barbara Williams, Shaw Media’s Senior Vice President, Content, in a statement. “We’re looking forward to going to camera on this refreshing new series.”

“You can’t make compelling television without great writing, an outstanding cast, and the support and encouragement of your network,” added Remedy executive producer (and president of Indian Grove Productions) Bernie Zukerman. “Fortunately for us, we have all three.”

Filming on Remedy will take place in Toronto and Hamilton, and will continue until January 2014. Global has yet to set a premiere date.
