Sneak Peek: Guillermo del Toro Delivers ‘The Simpsons’ Scariest Couch Gag Ever

The Simpsons’ show-opening couch gags have grown increasingly elaborate over the years, with guest directors such as graffiti artist Banksy and the animators from Robot Chicken raising the bar with tour-de-force contributions, and this week the reins have been handed over to Guillermo del Toro.

In the couch gag for this week’s annual “Treehouse of Horror”; episode, the Pacific Rim director has pulled out all the stops in a nearly three-minute, hilariously apocalyptic epic that references his surreal Oscar-winner Pan’s Labyrinth. In addition, del Toro throws in a kitchen sink of horror-movie elements, including zombies, classic movie monsters, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, giant tentacled monsters and animated cameos from everyone from Stephen King to Edgar Allan Poe.

The Simpsons” “Treehouse of Horror”; episode episode airs Sunday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. EST/PST on Global.
