In 1994 Elizabeth Hurley began a partnership with the Estée Lauder company to raise awareness for breast cancer. And now nearly 20 years later the cosmetics company – with Elizabeth’s help – has made significant strides with its pink ribbon campaign.
In a new interview with ET Canada the actress shares pride in all their achievements. “I was speaking to about 50 young women in London last week. They were all about under the age of 25. I was telling them how we’ve given out more than 120 million pink ribbons,”; explains the 48-year-old, “I realized that actually, they wouldn’t have known a world without the pink ribbon but I said to them, “when I was your age, it didn’t exist. No one knew anything, really about breast cancer, we just thought it was a death sentence.”;
Liz also recalls how a cancer diagnosis used to carry a stigma. She opens up to us about how that affected her own grandmother’s battle with the disease. “She didn’t tell anyone about her lump for a few years when she found it because she was so scared and embarrassed. It wasn’t a nice thing to talk about and I remember people saying behind their hands, “she’s got cancer.'”;
Now millions of people are committed to the cause — including a very special young man – Elizabeth’s son Damian. “He’s just so happy to get involved. He came to India with me to light a building pink,”; she reveals, “he’s been fantastic. He’s really part of the cause too.”;
