With the landmark 200th episode of Grey’s Anatomy airing tonight, series creator Shonda Rhimes finds herself in the unique position of looking back at the show’s nine-year legacy while also preparing for its future.
Part of that future, she reveals in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, could be a second spinoff of the sexy hit medical drama (Private Practice, starring Kate Walsh as OB/GYN Addison Montgomery, ended its six-season run early last year).
“I’ve thought about [a spinoff],”; Shonda told The Hollywood Reporter. “Every once in a while, I come up with a crazy idea. When we did our war episode where we saw Owen’s [Kevin McKidd] past and the history of his PTSD, I always thought that was an amazing world, with the idea of a MASH unit. There are a lot of different worlds for a spinoff. Right now, Grey’s is doing its thing and doing it well, and we don’t need another spinoff at this moment in time.”;
In the interview, Shonda [who, in addition to Grey’s, has her hands full with her other series, Scandal] also reveals that she hasn’t figured out how to conclude Grey’s when the series’ end inevitably comes — because she’s already used up the endings she had originally crafted. “I used to always have a final scene in mind, and we’ve passed the time in which that ending would happen,”; she says. “I had another final scene in mind, and I wrote it into an episode because I thought we were too far past when that could happen. I’ve done that five times with this show. This show does not seem to end. [Laughs.] I stopped trying to think about what the last moment of the show is going to be because we reinvent it at the beginning of every season, and it’s a different show each season.”;
The 200th episode of Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday, Oct. 10.
