The Showcase sci-fi hit Defiance won’t return until next year, but the cast stopped by New York’s Comic Con to drop some hints about what we can expect when the show returns for its second season.

During a panel to discuss the second season, TV Guide reports that Defiance producer-director Michael Nankin was joined by stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas and Jaime Murray, and Nankin revealed that the second season will pick up eight months after the end of the first season, with each of their characters  finding themselves in very different circumstances now that the town of Defiance is under the control of the Earth Republic.

“If anything’s happened in between series, it’s that everybody lost their jobs,”; Bowler told TV Guide. “So that thing that everyone distracts themselves with has been taken away from all these characters they’re not now left only with all their flaws, what they’re lacking, what they’re missing and what they’ve lost.”;

Meanwhile, Leonidas revealed that season two “really does get a lot darker,”; while Benz points out that her character, Amanda is going through a rough patch after the death of her sister and losing her job as mayor. “She’s definitely an idealist,”; Benz said of her character. “Especially in season one, she really believes in Defiance and in the town, but she’s been damaged. But she’s very good at covering it up and not revealing it. What I think is so exciting about season two is we see the mask is removed, and we get to see kind of her darker side.”;

Another thing for fans of the show to look forward to: the addition of new alien race, while the show will also delve deeper into the eight extraterrestrial races that are already on the planet.

The second season of Defiance is set to premiere in June 2014 on Showcase.
