In 2005, four Navy SEALs on a reconnaissance mission dubbed “Operation Red Wings”; were ambushed by Taliban insurgents. A rescue helicopter carrying back-up was sent, but the Taliban managed to shoot it down, killing everyone on board. In all, 19 American soldiers died in the battle. The only survivor was Marcus Luttrell, who went on to describe his harrowing ordeal in Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10.
Luttrell’s book has now been turned into a movie by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), and critics are already hailing it as a masterpiece on par with Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan. Although the new trailer begins on a curiously light-hearted note, it quickly becomes apparent that this is about as far away from Battleship (the previous movie that Peter Berg did with Taylor Kitsch) as you can get.
Lone Survivor will go into limited release on Dec. 27, and expand into wide release on Jan. 10.
