Update: Jake Gyllenhaal’s rep confirmed the news, providing ET Canada with the following statement:
“Jake was indeed filming Nightcrawler when during the shooting of the scene his character (purposefully) banged his hand into the mirror. Unfortunately the mirror broke and Jake’s hand was badly cut up. He got numerous stitches at the ER and was released. He already returned to set for work.”
Talk about commitment!
Not only did Jake Gyllenhaal lose a scary amount of weight for Nightcrawler, but he’s also subjected his body to something far more severe—broken shards of glass.
According to People, Gyllenhaal got so caught up in a scene in which he angrily talks to himself in the mirror that he went off-script and punched his reflection, cutting up his hand. Gyllenhaal was then rushed to the hospital where he received multiple stitches.
“Jake flipped out,”; a source on the set told People. “His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital.”;
Gyllenhaal reportedly returned to the set later that day.
