Although hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother will be concluding at the end of this season, the laughs may continue with a spinoff.
Tentatively titled How I Met Your Dad, Deadline is reporting that CBS has given a green light to filming a pilot of this new series from HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, with Emily Spivey (who created the doomed Will Arnett/Christina Applegate sitcom Up All Night) also on board.
According to Deadline, this new series won’t feature any of the characters or cast of HIMYM, but will tell the brand-new story of how a woman met and fell in love with the father of her children.
“Described as a kindred spirit of How I Met Your Mother telling the story from a female point of view, Dad tells a brand-new story with new characters and a new voice at its centre,”; says Deadline. “Linking the new group of New York friends and the HIMYM gang will be Ted, Barney, Marshall, Lily and Robin’s favourite hangout, MacLaren’s Pub, which also will be featured on the new show.”;
Although earlier reports indicated the new show would be set up in an episode of HIMYM later this season, it’s still unclear whether this will be the case.
If CBS likes what it sees, How I Met Your Dad could show up on the network’s 2014 fall schedule.
