MOVIE: Room (2015)
DIRECTOR: Lenny Abrahamson. WHY: The story and the performances are beautiful and heartbreaking. You really care about these characters and what happens to them. It's no surprise Brie Larson went on to win the Oscar this year for her role. The movie also introduced us to the fantastic talent that is Jacob Tremblay. We can't wait to see what is next from him.
MOVIE: Blindness (2008)
DIRECTOR: Fernando Meirelles. WHY: It’s a horrifying look at what would happen to society if everyone suddenly lost their eyesight.
MOVIE: Black Christmas (1974)
DIRECTOR: Bob Clark. WHY: Shot in Toronto's Beaches neighbourhood. Very scary and one of the earlier slasher films that started the genre. And of course it has the legendary Andrea Martin in it!
MOVIE: Goon (2011)
DIRECTOR: Michael Dowse. WHY: Small budget comedy that’s up there as one of the better hockey flicks of all time. It’s an ode to Canada!
MOVIE: Monsieur Lazhar (2011)
DIRECTOR: Philippe Falardeau. WHY: An incredibly human tale of grief, trauma, and unexpected friendships that catches you off-guard as it expertly moves between moments of tragedy and fish-out-of-water humour.
MOVIE: The Red Violin (1998)
DIRECTOR: François Girard. WHY: We love how the story is woven together and takes you around the world and through time.
MOVIE: Cube (1997)
DIRECTOR: Vincenzo Natali. WHY: It helped pave the way for horror films like “Saw” – it’s twisted and gory!
MOVIE: Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2008)
DIRECTOR: Sacha Gervasi. WHY: It’s funny and touching and loud and very Canadian.
MOVIE: Strange Brew (1983)
DIRECTORS: Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas. WHY: It was a snapshot of one of the truest forms of Canadian culture, and a sadly diminishing group: The Hoser.
