Anne Hathaway's Debut
Oscar-winning actresses have to start somewhere. "The Princess Diaries" is Anne Hathaway’s first film role.
Where Is Genovia?
In the film, Genovia is a small country located between France and Spain, similar to the real-life principality of Andorra. Their flag is green, white, and aqua-striped. And no, it’s not a real place.
Anne's Personal Touches
Mia's cat Fat Louie was played by four feline actors, one of which was Anne Hathaway's pet in real life. Anne’s father also makes an appearance in the film: the photo of Mia's deceased father is actually a photo of Anne's dad.
"The Princess Diaries" was filmed on the same soundstage that was used for "Mary Poppins". Originally called Stage 2, the Disney Studios soundstage has been renamed in honour of Julie Andrews.
'Pretty Woman' Connection
Garry Marshall directed "The Princess Diaries" and "Pretty Woman". Both Larry Miller, who plays Pablo, and Hector Elizondo, who plays Joe, appeared in "Pretty Woman". During a scene in which Mia breaks a glass, a waiter says, "It happens all the time." Alan Kent, who plays the waiter, appeared in "Pretty Woman", and spoke the same line to Julia Roberts.
Crown Of Jewels
Julie Andrews sported over half a million dollars’ worth of real diamond on loan from jeweller Harry Winston, including the diamond tiara she wears in the final scene. Anne Hathaway’s tiara was custom-made for her but considerably less expensive -– it was made of cubic zirconia.
Clumsy Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway proved to be a klutz by falling off her chair during her audition. She also takes a fall during the bleacher scene with Heather Matarazzo, which was unplanned – Hathaway tripped and Marshall thought it was funny so he kept it in the final movie.
A Musical Influence
Whitney Houston served as a producer on the film and produced the film’s sequel.
It Took Time To Be An Ugly Duckling
Anne Hathaway spent over an hour in the makeup chair each day getting Mia’s bushy eyebrows applied and an unruly clip-in hairpiece added to her head. The eyebrows were nicknamed "Frida" and "Kahlo" after famed painter and unibrow aficionado Frida Kahlo, while the hairpiece earned the name "The Beast".
From Princess To Cowgirl
After the success of the first film, "The Princess Diaries 2" followed in 2004. During filming Hathaway auditioned for "Brokeback Mountain" on her lunch break while wearing heavy make-up while dressed as a princess.
