Hart and his brother were raised by his mother in North Philadelphia. Though they reconciled later in life, his father had a severe cocaine addiction and was in and out of prison for much of his life. The comedian was incredibly close to his mother, Nancy, who passed away from cancer in 2007. He often talked about his mother in his stand-up routine, portraying her as a loving but intimidating single mother.
From Shoe Salesman To The Comedy Circuit
After graduating community college, Hart found a job as a shoe salesman in Boston. He quit the job to focus on doing stand-up on the comedy club circuit. He later admitted he didn't have a back-up plan if comedy didn't work out for him, joking he'd likely have ended up on the streets.
Who's Laughing Now?
At 5-foot-4, Hart frequently jokes about his short stature. When he first started performing, Hart went by the stage name Lil' Kev. Allegedly, the performance was a complete failure with much of his show dedicated to imitating other comedians like Chris Tucker. He was reportedly pelted with chicken wings during his set.
"There’s no way to respond to being hit with a buffalo wing," he said during an interview. "And there's no going back to comedy after that. I wiped the buffalo sauce off of my face and told everybody good night."
The Judd Apatow Connection
Judd Apatow gave Hart his big break on the short-lived TV series "Undeclared" in 2001. Hart became close friends with co-star Jason Segel, sharing an apartment with the actor at one point. The two again appeared together in "The Five-Year Engagement".
Big Box Office
Hart's 2013 stand-up film "Let Me Explain" is the highest-grossing stand-up comedy film to date. Hart's "What Now?" comedy tour is one of the biggest comedy tours of all-time, selling over 600,000 tickets in one month.
He's Afraid Of Dolphins
Hart is apparently deathly afraid of dolphins. The comedian has joked about his "near-death experience" after he was dragged to the bottom of a water tank by a dolphin in Maui.
NBA Celebrity All-Star Champ
Short men can jump! Hart has won MVP four times in a row in the NBA Celebrity All-Star tournament. In the 2012 game he got eight points and had six assists.
There's An App For That
The Little Jumpman app is a take on the popular Doodle Jump game and a take on Hart's diminutive stature. The jumping figure has Hart's face.
Bets Are On
He once bet an overweight friend that he couldn't lose weight. Concerned about his pal's health, Hart bet him $25,000 that he couldn't lose 60 pounds. He did.
His Beef With Drake
Hart started a humourous beef with Drake on Instagram after the rapper decided to roast the comedian over a leather vest he was wearing. Hart fired back by mocking a photo of Drake in a bathtub with a hookah, jokingly asking, "Is this a Canadian thing?" and comparing the photo to a Lionel Richie album cover.
