The Way They Were
In 2010, the English-Irish pop boy band finished in third place on 'The X Factor UK,' the show responsible for assembling the five young solo contestants into a group. Their 2011 debut album, 'Up All Night,' was an international hit and so were their next four albums. Hits like "What Makes You Beautiful," "Live While We're Young," and "Story of My Life" helped win them four MTV Video Music Awards and four Juno nominations for International Album of the Year. They're the first band in the history of the U.S. Billboard 200 to have their first four albums debut at #1. They're pictured here in 2012, the year Sony announced One Direction represented a $50-million business empire.
Then: Zayn Malik
Born: January 12, 1993
Known as: The Handsome One
Malik quit One Direction on 25 March 2015, saying he wanted to live as a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”
Exactly a year after announcing his departure from the band, he re-emerged under the mononym, Zayn, to release his debut solo album, ‘Mind of Mine.’ The album and its lead single, "Pillowtalk," reached #1 internationally, making Malik the first British guy to debut at #1 in both the UK and the US with his debut single and album.
He just released "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," a hit collab with Taylor Swift for the 'Fifty Shades Darker' soundtrack. He met Swift through his supermodel girlfriend, Gigi Hadid (pictured).
Then: Harry Styles
Born: February 1, 1994
Known as: Also The Handsome One
Dislikes: Dancing, just like Zayn
Styles dated British TV host Caroline Flack in 2011, despite their 14-year age gap. A year later, he was dating Taylor Swift and is said to be the inspiration for her 2012 hit song, "I Knew You Were Trouble."
Now: Harry Styles
Billboard reported in June 2016 that solo Styles had signed a three-album deal with Columbia, which is also One Direction's label. There is massive speculation that Styles will drop his first solo effort in time for the Grammy Awards on February 12 and there are rumours he'll perform at the ceremony.
No matter what transpires next month, he'll make his acting debut this July in Christopher Nolan's World War II action-thriller 'Dunkirk,' alongside Tom Hardy and Kenneth Branagh.
Then: Louis Tomlinson
Born: December 24, 1991
Known as: The Handsome One (These guys are all very handsome.)
Tomlinson appeared on British TV as a child actor and took part in school musicals before his fateful 2010 audition for 'The X Factor UK,' which led him to become a founding member of One Direction.
Now: Louis Tomlinson
The avid footballer (sorry, "soccer player") became a proud father in January 2016 to son Freddie Reign with past girlfriend Briana Jungwirth. He's now dating actress Danielle Campbell. Despite losing his mother to leukemia last month, he made good on a promise to perform his debut single, "Just Hold On," with Steve Aoki on 'The X Factor UK.'
Then: Liam Payne
Born: August 19, 1993
Known as: The Handsome One
Dislikes: Dancing, because none of these guys dance, OK? That's their thing: they don't do the choreographed, synchronized dance routines a la NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.
Payne starred in a local production of 'Saturday Night Fever' at age 12 and initially auditioned for 'X Factor UK' in 2008 before finding success on the show in 2010.
Now: Liam Payne
He's loved up with 'X Factor UK' host and former girl band member Cheryl Cole, who's 10 years his senior and has been photographed of late looking proudly pregnant alongside a beaming Liam. The singer revealed on Twitter that he has a recording deal with Capitol Records.
Then: Niall Horan
Born: September 13, 1993
Known as: The Handsome Irish One
Dislikes: Dancing/Irish Dancing
Horan taught himself to play guitar by watching YouTube. He cites Canadian star Michael Bublé as one of his biggest influences.
Now: Niall Horan
After his snaps on Instagram, we thought we'd lost this lad to soccer, golf, pubs, and his bromance with Canada's Shawn Mendes, but Horan has started working on his first solo album. In September, it was announced he'd signed a deal with Capitol Records and his hit debut solo single, "This Town" was released. Horan is nominated for a People's Choice Award for Favourite Breakout Artist and you can cheer him on when the awards are presented on January 18. (Mendes picked up the Favourite Breakout Artist award last year.)
The Way They WIll Be
Liam Payne brought hope to fans via Twitter in December when he answered this fan's question. Best Tweet ever!
