Season 4 of this Netflix anthology series started streaming on December 29. Each of its six stand-alone episodes examines how technology permeates modern life, but, like, in a cool (and sometimes very creepy) way.
'Star Trek: Discovery'
Trekkies are cheering for this latest franchise entry starring former 'Walking Dead' star Sonequa Martin-Green. The series returns to CBS on January 7.
Season 3 of this SYFY show based on the bestselling novels by Lev Brossman begins with an epic quest for Quentin and his friends to bring magic back. 'The Magicians' returns January 10.
We can't not talk about this buddy cop/'Lord of the Rings' mashup that Netflix unleashed on December 22. Don't let critical derision keep you from checking out this outing that includes elves and unicorns and orcs and stuff, if that's your thing.
'The X Files'
Mulder and Scully are back as the iconic pair of FBI special agents for season 11, which will hopefully resolve some of last season's whopping cliffhangers. 'The X Files' premieres January 3 on Fox.
'Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency'
They went out with a bang! The final two episodes of the second and final season of this strange and sci-fi-rific crime show featuring Elijah Wood started streaming in December.
If you're in the mood for a story that takes place in a future shrouded in mystery and peopled with influential aristocrats who store their minds' contents in spine-implanted cortical stacks, then you have very specific moods and also this show is for you. It debuts on Netflix February 2.
Don't overlook this series, which debuted in December. Critics are loving this supernatural family saga. It's set in a German town, which checks out because this is actually the first German series to be streamed internationally. Anyway, two kids disappear and things get creepy.
We know we promised you science fiction but we just couldn't pass up the chance to tell you about this documentary that is more science fact than fiction and explores artificial intelligence through a deceptively simple game.
'Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams'
Philip K. Dick wrote the story that 'Blade Runner' was based on and he also writes the stories that this series is based on, so if you like that manner of storytelling and you're on board for some serious acting talent courtesy of Steve Buscemi, Anna Paquin, Greg Kinnear, Bryan Cranston, Janelle Monáe, and more, then this program very well may make all of your electric dreams come true. This 10-part anthology series comes to Netflix on January 12.
