Kristen Bell Will Serve As The First-Ever Host
The ceremony is breaking with tradition in 2018 by assigning its first-ever host in Kristen Bell. We've no doubt "The Good Place" star will do a bang up job. The move follows in the footsteps of the Golden Globes who previously went host-free until memorably recruiting Ricky Gervais for the job in 2010.
All Female Presenters
For the first time in its history, the 2018 SAG Awards will feature exclusively women as presenters. Lupita Nyong'o, Emma Stone, Dakota Fanning and Halle Berry are among the women who will be handing out the hardware. Male actors will take the stage to introduce clips of their nominated films and, of course, if they win. Organizers say they're inspired by the Women's March of last year and the ongoing #MeToo movement.
Anthony Anderson And Sterling K. Brown Could Make History
Since its very first ceremony in 1995, the Screen Actors Guild Awards has yet to award a black actor in either the Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor in a Comedy Series or Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor in a Drama Series categories. That could change this year if Sterling K. Brown takes the win in the drama category for his work in "This Is Us" and/or Anthony Anderson is victorious in the comedy category for his work in "Blackish".
Nicole Kidman Is Expected To Win Her First SAG Award
Unbelievably, of all the acting trophies Nicole Kidman has collected over the course of her illustrious career, not one of them has been a SAG Award. Her losing streak is expecting to come to an end this year as she's the odds-on favourite to win for her performance in "Big Little Lies". This year marks Nicole's 10th SAG Award nomination. She was first nominated in 2002 for "Moulin Rouge" and it looks like 10th time will be the charm!
Julia Louis-Dreyfus Could Tie A Record
If Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins again for "Veep", the actress will tie Alec Baldwin and Julianna Margulies for the most SAG wins at eight. Julianna won six awards for her work in "ER" and an additional two for "The Good Wife" while Alec Baldwin won all eight of his for "30 Rock". JLD won five of her seven awards for "Seinfeld" with the other two for her performance in "Veep".
Denzel Washington Could Repeat
If Denzel Washington wins for his performance in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” it will be a repeat victory for the actor. In a surprise win last year, Denzel took home the statue for his performance in "Fences", beating out frontrunners Casey Affleck and Ryan Gosling for their respective performances in "Manchester By The Sea" and "La La Land".
Will Aziz Ansari And James Franco Show Up?
Both Aziz Ansari and James Franco are nominated for SAG Awards, for "Master of None" and "The Disaster Artist" respectively. Both actors recently won Golden Globes in their categories, and unfortunately the men have something else in common: they're both currently accused of sexual misconduct. It remains to be seen whether they will attend the ceremony and whether the accusations will affect their chances. Voting in the Screen Actors Guild Awards is still open and will close two days before the show on Jan. 19.
Morgan Freeman Will Receive A Lifetime Achievement Award
Prolific actor, Oscar-winner, and the voice of God (and Visa), Morgan Freeman will receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award this year. When the honour was announced back in August, SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris (aka Andrea Zuckerman from "Beverly Hills 90210"!) said about Freeman,
"He is innovative, fearless and completely unbound by expectations. As a chauffeur, convicted murderer, boxing gym attendant, pimp or president, Morgan fully realized every character, baring their souls and showcasing their humanity. It has been a privilege to see his genius at work.” Previous lifetime achievement award winners include Lily Tomlin, Betty White and Kirk Douglas.
