After releasing two albums in English -- 1990's 'Unison' and 'Celine Dion' in 1992 -- Dion was no stranger to success. She had earned three big Top-10 hits with "Where Does My Heart Beat Now", "If You Asked Me To", and the Grammy- and Oscar-winning track, "Beauty and the Beast". But her third English album, 'The Colour Of My Love', would propel her to new heights following its release on November 9, 1993.
Live In Quebec
In September 1993, prior to the release of 'The Colour Of My Love', Dion performed two concerts at the Capitole de Québec in Quebec City. The performance would later be broadcast and released as a home video in 1995 ("Home video" in 1995 is loosely the equivalent of a Netflix special in 2018). During the shows, she debuted a number of songs that would appear on 'The Colour Of My Love', including "Refuse to Dance", "Everybody's Talkin' My Baby Down", "The Colour of My Love", "The Power of Love", "Misled", "Think Twice" and "Only One Road".
"When I Fall in Love"
The record features a duet with British pop singer Clive Griffin on "When I Fall in Love", which appeared on the 'Sleepless in Seattle' soundtrack. The collection also includes a cover of Jennifer Rush's 1984 song, "The Power of Love".
The Power of a Smash Hit
"The Power of Love" was the record's first single and it was a #1 hit in Canada, the US, and Australia, while making a strong showing on the Top-10 charts in the U.K. and France. The single was certified platinum in 1994.
Dion's version of "The Power of Love" was produced by David Foster. The Victoria-born ex of Yolanda Hadid is the definition of a superstar producer. In addition to his collaboration with Dion, he's worked with Chaka Khan, Alice Cooper, Christina Aguilera, Andrea Bocelli, Toni Braxton, Michael Bublé, Chicago, Natalie Cole, Kenny G, Josh Groban, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, Kenny Rogers, Seal, Rod Stewart, Donna Summer, Olivia Newton-John, Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, and Barbra Streisand. For his efforts, he has won a whopping 16 Grammy Awards in 47 nominations. That's power. Here's a pic of Foster this past March in West Hollywood in honour of Elton John's annual Academy Awards celebration.
The next single, "Misled", became a Top-10 single in Canada and reached the #1 spot on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart in the States. "Think Twice" was the album's third release and it topped the charts in the U.K., Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
'The Colour of My Love' Tour
Dion embarked on "The Colour of My Love" tour on February 11, 1994, in San Francisco. After 10 dates in the States, Dion returned for a sold-out Canadian leg of her tour, which included a whopping six shows at the Montreal Forum and a show before 10,000 people in Hamilton. In April, Dion sang at a series of David Foster tribute concerts in Japan, which were recorded for a TV special with the awesome title of "JT Super Producers 94." Dion sang "The Power of Love", "Beauty and the Beast" with Peabo Bryson and "Love Lights the World" with Bryson and Color Me Badd.
Dion performed "The Power of Love" at the Juno Awards in 1994 and at the American Music Awards in 1995. She returned to the Juno stage in 1995 to perform "The Colour of My Love".
In December 1994, the album was certified diamond for selling one million copies. It became the second-bestselling album of the year 1994 in Canada, after Ace of Base's 'The Sign'. "When I Fall in Love" won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s) and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
The Top Of The Charts
'The Colour Of My Love' spent 149 weeks on the Billboard 200. It spent seven weeks at the top of the U.K. Album chart and for five weeks, the single "Think Twice" and the album topped the UK charts simultaneously, an achievement not realized since the Beatles did it in 1965. The album went to #1 in Ireland, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, and reached the Top 10 in France, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, and the Netherlands. 'The Colour Of My Love' won the 1995 Juno Awards for Album of the Year and for Bestselling Album (Foreign or Domestic). Just two of her 20 Juno Awards ... and counting!
