Adding to that, Kevin explains to Randall that their sister Kate thinks that she’s the only one who's able to pass on a piece of their dad, Jack, which is why she wants to go through with life-threatening IVF procedure.
Randall was crushed, and so were the fans.

Episode 4: Just Seconds Away
In previous episodes, we had heard of Jack's brother Nicky. In episode four of season 3, fans finally got to know the story of Jack's brother and how he joined the armed forces.
As it turns out, Nicky was two minutes away from being safe from the Vietnam war draft.

After learning more about Uncle Nicky, Kevin took it upon himself to take him to veteran centre in an attempt to help treat his alcoholism.
However, Nicky wasn't convinced and made it clear that he didn't think they would help.
This prompted Kevin to get frustrated and unfortunately revert back to his old ways. Fans were shocked and saddened when he decided to take a sip of the alcohol that he had found in Nicky's trailer.
Episode 14: Kate Has Her Baby
