Writer-director John Singleton has directed some of the most acclaimed dramas, thrillers and action films of the last three decades. Sadly ET Canada confirmed the filmmaker passed away at age 51 on Monday, in tribute here are some of the most memorable films of Singleton’s illustrious career.

Born in 1968, director John Singleton became one of the most successful and important African American directors working in Hollywood for almost 30 years.
'Boyz N The Hood' (1991)

John Singleton's directorial debut "Boyz n the Hood", starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and more, became a cultural touchstone in 1991.

The film also earned Singleton an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, the first ever for an African American, all at the young age of 24.
'Poetic Justice' (1993)

Singleton followed up "Boyz n the Hood" with the romantic drama "Poetic Justice" starring music legends Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur.

Jackson stars as a poet in the film, with poetry written by Maya Angelou. The film also earned Jackson an Oscar nod for Best Original Song for "Again".
'Higher Learning' (1995)

Singleton next made a splash with the 1995 ensemble drama "Higher Learning".

Starring Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube, Omar Epps, Michael Rapaport, Kristy Swanson, Laurence Fishburne and many more, the film follows the lives of three college students dealing with complicated issues of racism and sexual assault.
'Rosewood' (1997)

In 1997, Singleton directed the historical drama "Rosewood", starring Ving Rhames and Jon Voight, about a 1923 massacre in Florida in which a white mob killed black residents in their town.
'Shaft' (2000)

In 2000, Singleton directed a sequel the blaxploitation classic "Shaft", starring Samuel L. Jackson as the nephew of the original John Shaft, an NYPD detective investigating a racially motivated murder.
'2 Fast 2 Furious' (2003)

In 2003, Singleton took the reins of the Fast and Furious franchise for the sequel "2 Fast 2 Furious", featuring Tyrese Gibson and the late Paul Walker.
'Four Brothers' (2005)

In 2005, Singleton directed the hit crime thriller "Four Brothers", starring Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre Benjamin and Garrett Hedlund, as four adopted brothers avenging the murder of their mother.
