Selena and Justin
It was just eight years ago but 2011 has never sounded so long in the past. That's when a 20-year-old Gomez was filming a “Wizards of Waverly Place” reunion for Disney Channel and 18-year-old Bieber was as well known for hits like “Baby” and “Boyfriend” as he was for his bangs. Distance and their busy schedules were a contributing factor to their breakup. Our emotions were cruelly toyed with in 2018 when Instagram seemed to hint that Selena and Justin were a couple once more but any lingering rumours were put to rest when Bieber wed Hailey Baldwin last September.
Selena and The Weeknd
Remember back in 2016 when the Weeknd called it quits with model Bella Hadid and then picked things up with Selena Gomez? (Yes, this girl does have a thing for Canadian music stars.) Suddenly the Weeknd and Gomez were everywhere together: kissing in Santa Monica, posing at the Met Gala, and the Weeknd was by Gomez’s side when she underwent kidney surgery. These two seemed serious. But then — just mere months later — the pair had split, the Weeknd was back with Hadid, and Gomez was spotted having breakfast (Breakfast! The most suggestive of all meals!) with her ex, Justin Bieber. Turns out the romance between the Weeknd and Gomez was as ill-fated as the now-cancelled Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where the two performed in 2015, pictured.
John and Katy
Were we shocked when John Mayer and Jessica Simpson split in 2006? No. Were we shocked when John Mayer and Taylor Swift split in 2010? Nope. But Katy Perry seemed better suited to Mayer, plus their relationship hobbled along for two years, from 2012 to 2014, which is a long time for a Mayer relationship. Want to know how long ago these two were a couple? This pic was taken at the swearing-in of President Barack Obama at the presidential inauguration. It feels like a different time.
Gwen and Gavin
This! Was! Shocking! Gwen Stefani, the ageless, timeless boss of music, fashion, makeup, and more, was left broken-hearted after a cheating scandal. Her husband, that guy from the '90s band Bush, took up with the nanny. Stefani filed for divorce in August 2015 after nearly 13 years of marriage. Hopefully, she'll have the last laugh with her new man, Blake Shelton.
Blake and Miranda
Country music fans were feeling blue in 2015 when superstar country couple Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton announced their breakup. The shocking split came after the pair had been together for nearly a decade. And what would become of their careers? The pair’s music had become intertwined with their personal life and they’d collabed on over half a dozen hits. We should have never fretted: Lambert released her seventh record and married NYPD officer Brendan McLoughlin earlier this year. Shelton’s new album, 'Fully Loaded: God's Country', was released earlier this month. And in case you're new around these parts, Shelton is in a high-profile relationship with his "Voice" co-coach, Gwen Stefani.
Drake and Rihanna
It’s feels like AubRih have been on-again-off-again since they were first spotted canoodling in the spring of 2009. Things heated up with their No. 1 hit "What's My Name?" in 2010 and 2011’s “Take Care”. They certainly looked into each other during their steamy 2011 Grammy Awards performance, pictured. Speculation about their relationship was stratospherically high when the pair dropped their sexy “Work” video. But do the lyrics of "Too Good" offer insight into their personal dynamic? "I'm too good to you, I'm way too good to you/ You take my love for granted/ I just don't understand it." One thing’s for sure: regardless of their relationship status, their singles are fire emojis.
Nick, Kevin, and Joe
Okay, up until now we'd been showing you romantic couples made up of two music stars who unexpectedly called it quits. Here, we're taking a hard left turn for a quick detour into groups we thought would never, ever split. Case in point: The Jonas Brothers. How can a band of brothers break up? And yet, in 2013, the JoBros went on hiatus. By that point, they had been performing together for eight years, including this 2006 stop at MTV's TRL. In one of 2019's most welcome reboots, the brothers reunited and earned their first No. 1 with "Sucker".
Camila, Lauren, Ally, Dinah, and Normani
When Camila Cabello left Fifth Harmony, we collectively clutched our hearts. What was she thinking? With hits like "Work From Home" and "Worth It", the fierce fivesome was at peak power when Cabello bowed out three years ago. The group announced their split last year. Against the odds, Cabello has found major success as a solo star — and now, so has fellow former Fifther, Normani Hamilton. (She broke up with her last name and is now known as just "Normani".)
Harry, Niall, Louis, Zayn, and Liam
When Zayn left One Direction in March of 2015, it shook us to the core. The group continued as a four-piece but it was the end of an era. Specifically, it was the end of Zayn doing his hair like this and performing on the “Today” show, like they did in 2012, pictured. One Direction went on indefinite hiatus in January 2016. The split paved the way for successful solo records, most notably from Harry Styles, who is about to release ‘Fine Line’, and Niall Horan, who rocked it as a musical guest on “SNL” earlier this month.
Pete and Ari (Also Pictured: Bill)
Buckle up, because we’re about to get back into music star couples who shocked us when they called it quits, but first we have to stop by some couples where only one is a music star but their breakups were so noteworthy that they merit mention here. For example, who among us wasn’t shocked in May 2018 when Ariana Grande (music star) and Pete Davidson (non-music star, “SNL” star) Instagrammed that they were not just getting matching tattoos, but that they were engaged. For real: shock. And yet we were on board with it. Young? Sure. Haven’t known each other that long? OK. But we were pulling for them. So it was with shock and anguish that we met the news of their split five months later. All we have to show for it is this picture of the pair taking a selfie with former president Bill Clinton during the funeral service for Aretha Franklin last year. Que sera, sera.
This is as good a place as any to pour one out for Miley and Liam, Kylie and Travis, Mariah and Nick, and the famously un-coupled Gwyneth and Chris.
J-Lo and Marc
Once we got over "Bennifer" (R.I.P. 2002-2002), we were ready for Jennifer Lopez to find real and lasting love. And it looked like she had with fellow singer Marc Anthony in 2004. Although they split in 2014, they remain committed to raising their twins, born in 2008. J-Lo is now engaged to a little-known sports guy. (JK, he's a famous sports guy and it's A-Rod.)
Taylor and Calvin
Were we surprised when she and Joe Jonas broke up in 2008? Yep. When she broke up with Taylor Lautner in 2009? Nope. John Mayer in 2010? Nope. When she split with Jake Gyllenhaal in 2011? Yo, we were shook through that whole thing. When she and Zac Efron stopped dating in 2012? We were a bit surprised. When it was over between her and Harry Styles, we cried for a week. But when she and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris called it quits, we were shocked because this was one of Swift’s longest relationships, they seemed steady and they were in the same industry. Anyway, don’t cry for Tay-Tay, she’s currently dating English actor Joe Alwyn and if he doesn’t inspire some great lyrics, we’ll be shocked.
