The classic 1911 Frances Hodgson Burnett novel about an orphaned girl who discovers a magical garden hidden on her uncle Lord Archibald Craven’s (Colin Firth) estate is getting another big-screen adaptation. Fun fact: Firth starred in the 1987 British TV movie version of “The Secret Garden” as the adult Colin Craven.

‘The Personal History Of David Copperfield’

Charles Dickens’ original novel title was a mouthful: The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account). Luckily for us, we get a much more simplified version starring Dev Patel as the titular Copperfield in the film from “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci.

Alfred Hitchcock famously directed the 1940 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novel about a young woman living in the shadow of her wealthy husband’s deceased first wife. Though originally published in 1938, du Maurier’s novel is the ultimate domestic thriller, especially when put in the hands of director Ben Wheatley (“Kill List”) who will reteam with his “Free Fire” stars Armie Hammer and Sam Riley for the film. Lily James will play the titular Rebecca opposite Hammer as her new husband, Maxim de Winter. Kristin Scott Thomas will take on the role of the prickly housekeeper Mrs. Danvers.
