She Made Christmas Her Own
December 25th may celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but since Mariah Carey released her first Christmas album in 1994, JC has been forced to share the holiday with MC. Plenty of artists have released holiday records but no one quite owns the season like Mariah. Her single, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' has become a Christmas classic that has only grown in popularity since its release, so much so that in December 2019 it went to No. 1 -- 30 years after its initial release! Mariah pretty much owns the entire month of December.
Her Iconic Episode of 'MTV Cribs'
Mariah's 2002 episode of the popular MTV series "Cribs" is easily one of the show's best, and the stuff of pop culture legend. As Mariah invites cameras into her penthouse in the Tribeca area of New York, the episode features several wardrobe changes, Mariah literally getting into a bath, and offering up some decor tips by saying, "I chose colours that are neutral and not jarring, I have enough jarring things happening to me on a daily basis." Same, Mariah. Same.
'I Don't Know Her'
In the early 2000s, when a German reporter asked Mariah her opinion of Jennifer Lopez, Mariah unleashed the ultimate in petty dismissals: "I don't know her," she replied with a sly smile and an innocent nod of her head. Those four little words became the gold standard of the art of subtle shade and are still used to this day. Iconic.
When She Shaded Madonna
Jennifer Lopez wasn't the only target of Mariah's shade. Back in 1995 when she was asked about Madonna at a press conference in London, Mariah replied, "I really haven't paid attention to Madonna since I was in, like, seventh or eighth grade when she used to be popular." Ouch. To be fair, Madonna had allegedly issued the first shot, saying that Mariah wasn't particularly bright.
She Nicknamed Her Twins Dem Babies
Only Mariah Carey would come up with an official nickname for her twins. Moroccan and Monroe (a.k.a. Roc n' Roe) were born in 2011 after a pregnancy Mariah described as "bleak." The star even registered a (now-defunct) website for Dem Babies who are now nearly nine years old and often spotted on stage with their famous mom.
Her Feud With Eminem
Battles are common in the rap world but it's rare for a rapper and pop princess to have beef. But in 2002 a longtime feud was ignited when, on his album 'The Eminem Show' Slim got shady and name-checked Mariah on two tracks, most memorably on 'Superman' when he rapped, "What you tryin' to be my new wife? What you Mariah?" Eminem swore the two had a relationship while Mariah maintains it was strictly business. Later that same year Mariah released her album 'Charmbracelet' featuring the song "Clown", which was believed to be about Eminem although she never mentions his name. The two have traded barbs over the years, both in the media and in song, but none of Marshall's missives have been quite as momentous as Mariah's song "Obsessed" off her album 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel' on which Mariah dresses up as Eminem and portrays hi as a pathetic, obsessed loser. Again, without ever naming him.
Any Time She Talks About 'American Idol'
Mariah joined the judges panel of "American Idol" for the show's 12th season, alongside Randy Jackson, Keith Urban, and Nicki Minaj. And let's just say it wasn't Mariah's most-loved career moment. She and Nicki Minaj were often at odds and Mariah has since expressed her hatred of her time on "Idol" many times, saying things like, "I would never want to be involved with it again," and calling it "the worst experience of my life," and "it was bleak, dahling, it was a bleak experience."
When She Invited Us Into 'Mariah's World'
In 2016 Mariah debuted "Mariah's World' an eight-episode series following the songstress as she launched the European leg of her "Sweet Sweet Fantasy" tour and prepared for her (eventually called-off) wedding to James Packer. That's right, the elusive chanteuse wasn't so elusive anymore. But in true Mariah fashion, the singer refused to refer to call the series a reality show, instead preferring to call it a "docuseries." Whatever you call it, the show gave us even more insight into the diva's decadent dynasty, including that she doesn't put on her own shoes, she refuses to be seen in fluorescent lighting without sunglasses, and we see her have a Mariah Carey-themed party where guests must come dressed up as her. Amazing.
That New Year's Eve Performance
On December 31, 2016, in the last few minutes of the year, moments before the clock struck midnight welcoming in 2017, Mariah Carey took to the stage in New York's Times Square as part of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest". It didn't take long for things to go off the rails. After launching into her 1991 hit 'Emotions' it was clear Mariah was in trouble, announcing she couldn't hear in her earpiece. She told the crowd they didn't soundcheck the song, and eventually stopped trying altogether, saying she was going to let the audience sing, although in true diva style, she did remind the crowd the song went to No. 1. The performance could not be salvaged with Mariah declaring, "It is What it is" while the Twittersphere exploded. The media called the performance everything from "an epic fail" to a "disaster" and a "debacle." In true Mariah fashion, Mimi herself took to Twitter later than night saying simply, "Sh!t happens."
That Other New Year's Eve Performance
After the disastrous way in which she rung 2017, Mariah was invited back to "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest" to ring in 2018 and, of course, to redeem herself. The performance went off without a hitch but it wasn't without a true Mariah moment. After flawlessly singing her very first hit, "Vision of Love" Mariah wanted tea. The problem is that there wasn't any tea. "I just wanna take a sip of tea if they'll let me," she told the crowd. "They told me there'd be tea, ugh, what a disaster. Well I'll just have to rough it like everyone else with no hot tea." Dahlings, with Mariah, there's always tea.
