“Call Me By Your Name” actor, Timothee Chalamet, is reportedly at the top of the casting dream list for the Warner Bros. Production which is reportedly looking to begin in the UK in September and Chalamet’s schedule is wide open - meaning there's plenty of opportunity for him to take on the eccentric candy maker.
Timothee Chalamet might face some tough competition from Tom Holland. It seems Spider-Man himself is also being eyed for the lead according to casting rumours. Playing Willy Wonka requires some fast footwork for dancing around the chocolate factory, which would be a piece of cake for the former gymnast.
The Canadian actor is pretty familiar with all things Wonka. In 2017, the “Stranger Things” star joined John Stamos, Elle King and “Weird” Al Yankovic in a live musical concert presentation of “Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory”. Though he played Charlie Bucket in the special event, we think he’s ready to graduate to Wonka status.
The “Make Me Feel” singer may not seem like an obvious choice, but soon after news that the movie was given the green light and a 2023 release date, Twitter users started championing Monae as Wonka. We can totally see it thanks to her love of candy-coloured outfits and high fashion looks.
The “Watermelon Sugar” singer has proven to be a chameleon and what better way to embrace it than from inside a candy factory? Styles only has one major film credit to his name with a small supporting role 2017’s “Dunkirk”, but that’s about to change with his lead role in rumoured girlfriend Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” and an unconfirmed part in the upcoming drama “Faster, Cheaper, Better”. And we know the fashion-forward star would be down with Wonka’s suit.
Freddie Highmore could come full-circle with “Wonka”. Viewers might recall “The Good Doctor” star was cast as the young Charlie Bucket in Tim Burton’s 2005 take, “Charlie And The Chocolate Factory”. We think casting him as the young candy connoisseur would be sweet.
Like Harry Styles, the Jo Bro is pivoting into a career as a movie star. He’s currently in production on the movie “Blacksmith”, with Laurence Fishburne but his schedule could be clear by the time “Wonka” is ready to start filming. Plus, we already know he can hit all the right notes when it comes to singing “Pure Imagination”.
The “Riverdale” star only has one big screen lead role under his belt so far, but he could earn himself new fans with his take on ”Wonka”. Better yet: get twin brother Dylan Sprouse involved and make “Wonka” a dark tale about siblings fighting to become the top candy maker.
When news of a Willy Wonka prequel first made waves back in 2016, Miller’s name was at the top of the casting rumour pile – along with Donald Glover and Ryan Gosling. While Glover and Gosling have aged out of the role, at 28, Miller is still a prime candidate.
The Internet has “Bridgerton” fever! As one of the hottest series around, Newton – who plays Colin Bridgerton – has momentum on his side. We’d love to see the 23-year-old Brit get his chance to cruise down the chocolate river.
