When he got the directing gig, Marvel sent him the entire collection of “Thor” comics for research, which no doubt delighted Branagh.

When it came to casting the role of Thor it reportedly came down to brothers Liam and Chris Hemsworth. “We both came all the way over here from Australia and ended up battling against each other,” Chris said of facing off against his brother for the part. Chris previously said he was rooting for his younger brother to nab the role.

The actor likened him to a “nastier version” of “King Lear”’s Edmund, the illegitimate son of the Earl of Gloucester, who was jealous of his legitimate brother Edgar and tricked his father into banishing him into exile.

Branagh also let Hopkins improvise his reaction to Thor yelling at him in the banishment scene which left most of the cast and crew in tears, with Hemsworth and Hiddleston struggling to maintain their composure as the cameras rolled.
