The Buzz: “Oculus” and “The Haunting Of Hill House” writer/director Mike Flanagan is back with a new Netflix series, “Midnight Mass”. In this chilling series, an isolated island community experiences both miraculous events and frightening omens after the arrival of a charismatic young priest (Hamish Linklater). Fans of Flanagan’s other projects will recognize familiar faces among the cast including his wife Katie Siegel, Henry Thomas, Annabeth Gish and Rahul Kohli.

The Buzz: It’s the ultimate fear: being sent to a nursing home against your will. Barbara Hershey stars as Judith, a woman who reluctantly moves into a historic nursing home after suffering a mild stroke. In her new residence Judith becomes convinced an evil supernatural force is killing the residents of the home. With her family convinced she’s suffering from delusions and not demons, Judith must either find an escape or fall victim to the evil lurking around every corner.

The Buzz: Dark Icelandic folk-horror “Lamb” stars Noomi Rapace as a one half of a childless couple who find themselves parenting a strange and mysterious creature. The slow-burning tale premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it earned praise for its all-around weirdness and dark and creepy nature.

The Buzz: Another casualty of the pandemic, “Halloween Kills” should have arrived in theatres in 2020. The 12th instalment in the “Halloween” franchise and a direct sequel to 2018’s “Halloween”, Jamie Lee Curtis once again reprises her role as the long-tormented Laurie Strode with the story picking up just minutes after the end of the last film.

The Buzz: The 1997 teen slasher gets a TV update with a young and sexy new cast. Originally adapted from the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan, the new TV version is a teenage melodrama with all the modern problems of social status, identity, drugs and, oh yeah, murder.

Where To Watch: On Showcase
Everyone's favourite evil doll is heading to the small screen with Brad Dourif reprising his voice role as Chucky. A direct sequel to the previous seven movies about the red-headed doll with a penchant for murder, Showcase's "Chucky" is an angsty coming-of-age tale centred around teen Jake (Zackary Arthur). Bullies, sexuality, and yes, murder, are all here when "Chucky" premieres on Oct. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Showcase.

The Buzz: When the “Antlers” trailer dropped online in 2020 horror fans couldn’t contain their excitement on Twitter. A small town chool teacher (Keri Russell) and her sheriff brother (Jesse Plemons) become concerned one of her students is harbouring an evil supernatural creature inside his house. Filmed in Vancouver in 2018, “Antlers” is produced by Guillermo del Toro.

The Buzz: Edgar Wright channels the dark side of the swinging ‘60s in his time-bending psychological horror about a young woman (Thomasin McKenzie) with a passion for fashion who finds herself transported back in time to 1966 London and into the body of her idol, a singer named Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy). The past and present begin to fall apart as dark and terrifying secrets and consequences are revealed.

The Buzz: Ten years after secret serial killer killer Dexter Morgan went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, he is now living under a new name in a new city far away from his original Miami hunting grounds. Michael C. Hall is reprising the lead role and John Lithgow will return (presumably in flashbacks) as the Trinity Killer in the rebooted series.

Where To Watch: On Shudder
The Buzz: Set in 1843, “The Last Thing Mary Saw” centres around a young woman (Isabelle Fuhrman) under investigation following the mysterious and violent death of her family’s matriarch. The hype surrounding the film ahead of its world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Festival was so huge, Shudder swooped in and picked it up for distribution before it screened for audiences.

The Buzz: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are all back for another round of the Ghostface Killer. Though it’s billed a relaunch of the franchise, it’s a direct sequel to “Scream 4” and is said to focus on a young woman who returns to her hometown only to encounter a number of murder cases linked to a mysterious masked killer. It also marks the first time OG director Wes Craven won’t helm a “Scream” franchise film.

The Buzz: “Sinister” director Scott Derrickson reteams with star Ethan Hawke to bring a short horror story by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) to the big screen. While Hawke may have played a good guy in “Sinister”, this time around he gets to play a killer who kidnaps a man named Finney Shaw and traps him in a soundproof basement. Finding a disconnected phone, Finney discovers its ability to transmit the voices of the killer's previous victims, who try to help him escape.

And quite frankly that’s more than enough to get us and everyone else buzzing.

The Buzz: Key and Peele but stop-motion animation! “Coraline” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” director Henry Selick directs a stop-motion family-friendly horror comedy starring the voices of Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key as two demon brothers who face off against a nun and a pair of goth teens.

The Buzz: David Bruckner (“The Night House”) brings iconic horror villain Pinhead back to life in a reboot of the franchise that began in 1987. Marking the 11th entry in the franchise, the movie has been stuck in development for years but is finally in pre-production and expected to be released in 2022. And the best news: English horror novelist and creator of “Hellraiser” is on board for this reboot.
