From 2006 to 2009, Lavigne was married to Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley. Prior to getting engaged in Venice, Italy in June 2005, the Canadian rockers dated for roughly one year. They tied the knot 13 months later in a private California ceremony. However, after three years of marriage, the two split in September 2009. One month later, Lavigne filed for divorce. At the time, she issued a public statement on her website, writing: "Deryck and I have been together for 6-and-a-half years. We have been friends since I was 17, started dating when I was 19, and married when I was 21. I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship."
She added that they would be "moving forward on a positive note."
Whibley shared his own message on Sum 41's MySpace page, calling the past six and a half years "the most amazing years of my life," while noting that their "decision to part ways is amicable" and that Lavigne "holds a special place in my heart and forever will."
Amid their breakup, a source told People that the "Girlfriend" singer "married too young" and "finally realized that she needs her own life and needs to explore things without him."
Avril and Deryck remained friends and continued to work together.

Lavigne was rumoured to be dating singer Brandon Davis in September 2009, before news of her and Whibley's divorce became public.
At the time, a source told People that "She and Brandon Davis have a good time together," while another insider claimed there was "no romance" between the pair amid her separation from Whibley.

Two months later, in November 2009, rumours began spiralling that the "Complicated" singer was dating Wilmer Valderrama after the two were spotted at Los Angeles hotspot Wonderland together that same month.
A source told People that "they only had eyes for each other" even though "there were others at the table."
"They were whispering close the entire night, laughing and having a lot of fun," the insider continued. "They've been friends for a long time and have worked together before."

Brody Jenner

Ever since Lavigne was spotted locking lips with reality star Brody Jenner in April 2010, the two became linked.
According to a source, they were "all over each other at a nightclub" in Las Vegas.
The following October, Lavigne was spotted partying again with Brody at a Hollywood club. However, by January 2012, they called it quits, but remained friendly, proving on Twitter that there was no bad blood between them.
"It really upsets me to read all the FALSE!! stories," Jenner tweeted that same month. "Avril has always been there for me and is the closest person to my heart. I love her." Lavigne later replied, "Luv u 2!!! @brodyjenner."

After a six-month whirlwind romance, Lavigne got engaged to Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger in August 2012 after initially meeting in February of that same year when they collaborated on the song "Let Me Go" off Lavigne's fifth studio album. The two wed on July 1, 2013 in the south of France and were married for two years before splitting up in September 2015.
"It is with [a] heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today," Lavigne shared on Instagram at the time. "Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments. We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other."
Avril and Chad remained friends, reuniting in the recording studio in March 2016. They even performed on stage together in September 2017.

Amid her friendly relationship with ex-husband Kroeger, Lavigne became linked to music producer J.R. Rotem in August 2017 after he uploaded a photo of them working together to his Instagram page. The couple were also spotted holding hands a few months later that October, however, ever since the fall spotting, they were never seen out together again and never formally announced their split.

The following year, the "My Happy Ending" musician met Phillip Sarofim, the son of Egyptian-American billionaire Fayez Sarofim, "through friends at a dinner party and hit it off," according to a source. Since meeting, they began dating and were spotted on a dinner date in Los Angeles together in March 2018. The next month, they were photographed holding hands and, in May 2018, they were seen on another dinner date. By November of that same year, the pair had broken up.

In 2020, the Canadian singer-songwriter briefly dated indie musician Pete Jonas. The couple made their relationship red carpet official by stepping out together for Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy gala that January. It's unclear how long the two remained together and when exactly they parted ways.

Lavigne nearly wed for the third time after getting engaged in Paris to singer Mod Sun, whose real name is Derek Smith, in March 2022. Prior to their engagement, the couple dated for just over a year after first meeting when they collaborated in January 2021 on Lavigne's album Love Sux. They made their romance Instagram official in September 2021 and also made their red carpet debut that same month. In February 2023, news broke that their 10-month engagement had been called off.
"Avril and Mod Sun have been on and off for the past two months, but are no longer together as a couple," a source confirmed.
Before their breakup became public, Lavigne was spotted hugging rapper Tyga, however a source shut down cheating rumours, explaining that the two are "genuinely friends and nothing more. There was absolutely no third party involved in the split."

The "Sk8ter Boi" musician was first spotted with Tyga on February 19, 2023 after dining together at Nobu in Los Angeles, one day before Lavigne called off her and Mod Sun's engagement. A few weeks later, the pair both travelled to France for Paris Fashion Week and were spotted arriving to Leonardo DiCaprio's party together at Kùkù restaurant. A few days later, Avril and Tyga were seen smooching outside another fashion week after party.
According to a source, "Tyga and Avril are getting to know each other," noting that "It's very new. It's very casual."
