Dawn of the Dead (2004)
In theory, the idea of remaking George A. Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead was a terrible one. But against all odds, Zack Snyder managed to deliver a zombie movie that was almost on par with the original.
The Crazies (2010)
Dawn of the Dead isn't the only first-rate remake of a Romero classic. Breck Eisner's remake of The Crazies was similary brilliant.
Let Me In (2010)
The Swedish Let the Right One In boasted two phenomenal performances from its lead child actors and some seriously chilling winter cinematography. Amazingly, the performances and cinematography in the American remake are just as strong, if not better.
The Fly (1986)
The original Fly (1958) starring Vincent Price seems rather silly when compared to David Cronenberg's masterful and heartbreaking remake.
The Ring (2002)
The original Japanese Ringu was a fairly effective chiller. But Gore Verbinski's remake elevated the material to another level.
The Thing (1982)
Few horror movies can match Howard Hawks' classic Thing From Another World (1951). But John Carpenter's remake came tantalizingly close.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
When it was first announced that Michael Bay was producing a remake of Tobe Hooper's 1974 slasher classic, many feared the worst. But not only did Marcus Nispel slick, MTV-style remake prove to be not awaful, it was actually pretty good.
Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)
Rooney Mara has spoken dismissively of this film in recent years, but she has nothing to be ashamed of. This remake of the Wes Craven classic is every bit as stylish and atmospheric (if not quite as well-acted and well-written) as her signature film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Compared to John Carpenter's original Halloween (1978), Rob Zombie's remake isn't much of a film. But if you're able to supress your memory of the original, the remake is actually kind of diverting.
Evil Dead (2013)
Okay, so it's not nearly as funny or as compelling as Sam Raimi's original. But it is almost as stylish, and considering how stylish Raimi's original was, that's a fairly impressive accomplishment.
